Connecticut Teaching Jobs Lost Exceed 1,000

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Thousands of Connecticut teaching jobs have been lost during the last year.

The Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents recently completed a study that found up to 1,200 positions have been eliminated. Most jobs have been lost because of the state’s budget deficit and concerns about the economy. On top of that, costs have continued to increase while state aid has remained the same.

“There are a good number of districts that have been able to avoid eliminating jobs this year but if we have another year like this, they may not be able to avoid it again,” Joseph Cirasuolo, executive director of the CAPSS, told the Hartford Courant. “It’s been a tough time. It’s never easy to make decisions to cut back because everything and everyone is viewed as worthwhile.”

Connecticut Teaching Jobs Could be Cut

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

If the State of Connecticut adopts the General Assembly’s budget deficit mitigation plan, it could mean the loss of Connecticut teaching jobs.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell
is urging legislative leaders to adopt the spending cuts outlined in her own plan to help avoid cuts to state employees and higher education. Rell’s plan proposes $6.3 million in additional agency spending reductions, while the Legislature’s plan would require $20 million in unspecified cuts.

“I have cut agency spending over and over – and I have done everything in my power to avoid state employee layoffs in this extraordinarily difficult economic climate,” Rell said in a press release. “In every agency, I have cut the two biggest line items – personal services and other expenses – to the bone. The only exception has been higher education, which has seen just one round of cuts because I did not want students and parents to endure tuition increases in the midst of an economic downturn.

Connecticut Education Jobs Could be Cut

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Some Connecticut education jobs could be affected by state budget cuts.

The Connecticut Association of Urban Superintendents is planning to host a legislative breakfast next month to help promote its goal to preserve state education aid and spend unfunded mandates. According to an article by The Hartford Courant, Connecticut’s education board approved potential budget cuts earlier this month that could cut Education Cost Sharing aid to school districts by $230 million.

Municipal leaders have met with legislative delegations to press for protection of ECS funding and the urban superintendents group plans to voice that message as well. Even well-off communities are facing budget cuts because costs for staff, insurance and special education are increasing while state aid is decreasing. This is a turn-around from previous months when education jobs increased.
