Program Recognizes Companies Creating Diverse Jobs in CT

The Connect-Ability initiative is recognizing six companies who have made a concentrated effort to create diverse jobs in CT.

According to a press release, the State of Connecticut’s Connect-Ability initiative recognized Dee’s One Smart Cookie (Glastonbury), Green Demolitions (Norwalk), Russ McDaniel Carpentry (Old Lyme), St. Francis Hospital Food & Nutritional Program (Hartford), Target (Meriden store), and Walgreens Distribution Center (Windsor) as recipients of the fifth annual Connect-Ability Top Employer Award for their aspirations, leadership and dedication to removing barriers to hiring and promoting people with disabilities.

The Connect-Ability Top Employers received recognition for their best practices on maintaining a diverse workforce that includes people with disabilities. Some of their best practices include: developing and sustaining aggressive work programs aimed at attracting and retaining people with disabilities and including people in recovery, creating a universal design work environment, participating in on-the-job training with the state’s Bureau of Rehabilitation Services and participating in Disability Mentoring Day.

ShopRite Adds Retail Jobs in Connecticut

ShopRite has opened a completely renovated store and will be adding several new retail jobs in Connecticut, company spokespeople confirm.

The new store is located at 775 Main Street South in Southbury. It occupies the space formerly owned by Shaw’s Supermarket. Connecticut has about 22 ShopRite stores total. The Southbury ShopRite is owned and operated by the Cingari family, who have been in the supermarket business since 1943, through three generations. Through their Norwalk-based company, Grade A Markets Inc., the family operates nine ShopRite stores, including seven in Fairfield County and two in New Haven County.

Connecticut Unemployment Decreases

For the fifth consecutive month, Connecticut added jobs to its economy, which now represents a total of 14,700 new jobs since December 2009 and a decrease in Connecticut unemployment.

Although three of the state’s 10 major industry sectors did show job gains, the majority of this increase was the result of Census jobs.

The increase brings the state’s nonfarm employment for May to 1,622,800, and the unemployment rate ticked down slightly to 8.9 percent. On a seasonally adjusted basis, this represents a decrease of 8,000 jobs over the year, when nonfarm employment for May 2009 totaled 1,630,800. (more…)
