Zone Could Create Jobs in Connecticut

Monday, May 18th, 2009

A new effort is underway to help create more jobs in Connecticut.

The Connecticut state Senate is planning to act this week on a proposal to create a special economic development zone in four towns bordering Bradley International Airport. According to an article by CNBC, the legislation would affect parts of Windsor Locks, Suffield, East Granby and Windsor.

The state has faced two consecutive quarters of job losses totaling 39,000. So far, the state has lost 70,000 jobs since employment topped out two years ago, meaning its only two-thirds of the way to its projected low point.

New Connecticut media jobs will be created when the NBC show Deal or No Deal begins shooting a daytime version of the game show in Connecticut instead of Los Angeles.

Howie Mandel, who hosts the Friday night version of the show, also will appear in the shorter daytime episodes. According to an article by the Hartford Courant, the second season of the show will begin taping at Sonalysts studios in Waterford this fall. Endemol USA, the show’s producer, has leased 15,000-square-feet of space for an undisclosed amount of time.

According to an estimate by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Connecticut will spend $90 million on credits for the show this fiscal year.
