Hearst Corporation recently announced that it has cut 44 jobs at its Connecticut newspapers and plans to eliminate another 80 positions in the next three months. The cuts are all part of a consolidation and cost-cutting effort, according to an article by The Advocate.

Connecticut is slated to receive an additional $29.3 million in federal stimulus money to enhance unemployment benefits and job training for the thousands of residents who have lost their jobs. These funds are in addition to the $11 million the state received earlier this year, which increased unemployment by $25 per week.

Connecticut qualified for the additional funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by allowing workers to use their more recent earnings to qualify for benefits. The Connecticut Department of Labor is able to use the funds to pay for unemployment benefits, administer its unemployment insurance program or deliver employment services.

Connecticut Environmental Jobs Created by Stimulus Funds

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Some money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will help create Connecticut environmental jobs.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell recently announced that the State of Connecticut will receive $24 million in federal stimulus funds for energy efficiency projects at the state and local level. Of the $24 million, more than $15 million has been awarded directly to many municipalities. The $24 million is on top of an additional investment of $102.8 million for weatherization and other energy funding the state will receive through stimulus funding.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for towns and cities to make investments that build on our long-term goals for a cleaner environment while creating jobs at the local level,” Rell said in a press release. “Municipalities have the flexibility to use these grants for project that best suit their needs.”
