Connecticut Environmental Jobs Get Help from Green State Regulations

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Those concerned about increasing the number of Connecticut environmental jobs may soon get some help.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell recently announced that the State of Connecticut has finalized a comprehensive list of regulations for the construction and renovation of state-owned buildings and public schools. The regulations will help create more green collar jobs and reduce the facilities’ energy consumption and costs.

“We are building a cleaner, greener future for all of Connecticut,” Rell said in a press release. “These strict standards will lead to a new generation of energy efficient ‘green’ buildings, and ultimately reduce our carbon footprint on the environment. Our children, grandchildren and generations beyond will benefit from the stewardship that we commit to today.”

Connecticut Government Jobs Added Despite Hiring Freeze

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

More than 800 Connecticut government jobs have been added in recent months, despite the hiring freeze issued in May 2008 by Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

According to the State Comptroller’s Office, which compiled data for The Stamford Advocate, Connecticut has hired 824 full-time employees since the hiring freeze was issued. The new positions, which have cost the state more than $14 million, are at a variety of state agencies, according to an article by Newsday.

The more than 800 jobs added don’t include more positions added by the University of Connecticut, the UConn Health Center and the Judicial Branch, whose hiring and payroll aren’t overseen by Comptroller Nancy Wyman. Rell’s office has stated the governor does not control judicial, legislative or higher education jobs, and has made exceptions for jobs that affect public health and safety and those that save overtime money and contracting costs.

Some Connecticut construction jobs will soon be created when a local airport gets a makeover.

The State of Connecticut recently announced that the Connecticut Development Authority has issued $9 million in industrial revenue bonds for renovations at Sikorsky Memorial Airport. The money should create jobs at the airport and increase capacity for more aircraft.

“Improvements at Sikorsky Airport will continue to build on our efforts to attract and grow businesses,” Governor M. Jodi Rell said. “With its proximity to Interstate 95 and other major highways, Sikorsky can develop into an essential hub for not only the region but for all of Connecticut. The CDA financing underscores our commitment to this smart growth initiative.”
